I don’t know whether this is an ambient, rock, or an acoustic EP. What I do know is that it’s taken a long time for myself as an artist to feel my love affair for diverse music genres to come together this well. The song ‘Drive Down South’ began for me by revisiting a memory I have near King’s Canyon, California. I’d like to road trip there again one day, and this daydream steered the song toward somewhere deeper south in the desert. The song took months for me to realize fully, but once it neared completion, I felt that its evolution of creative processes became static, and that’s not the way I want my listeners to consume my art. So, I wrote another version of ‘Drive Down South,’ an acoustic take with an alternate experience for the narrator. My point I was trying to make with the song revision was that songs and music are not static - as they say, ‘an artist’s work is never complete, it’s just abandoned in interesting places,’ or something like that. I wanted to make the point that we as artists shouldn’t be afraid of revision and getting something completely new out of our work. Nor should the listener purchase a record and think ‘this is THE finite version of the song.’ Art doesn’t work like that. It evolves, and we shouldn’t fear failure.
